The European Cup group stage opens today (Wednesday) with two Israeli representatives. One was smiling at the end of the evening and the other was defeated and hopes to recover in the next round – Upper Galilee easily beat the local Kiybey Yeli in Kosovo with a resounding 76:93 while Hapoel Haifa surrendered at home 79:63 against the Turkish Gaziantep.
Let’s start with the winner from the Galilee, who after the dramatic derby against Gilboa, in the end lost at the end of two overtimes, lost in the second quarter and never looked back from there on the way to the prestigious victory. Jalen Hudson led the Reds’ scoring with 20 points and 5 rebounds, Dayshawn Booker added 18 points along with 8 assists.
Sharon Drucker’s Hapoel Haifa actually came after the victory in the BS, but was very weak offensively, especially in the last quarter which they finished with only 8 points and many reasons to worry about the continuation of their European campaign. Devonte Epson was the bright spot for the Haifaites with 16 points and 11 rebounds, including 4 assists.
