“The state misled us”: the High Court rejected the appointment of Rabbi Shira Mirili Mirvis

by time news

A day after the announcement of the dissolution of the Knesset about four months ago, Matan Kahana announced the appointment of Rabbi Shira Marilee Mirvis as the Ministry’s supervisor of the Efrat Religious Council. Since then, a long saga began, the main of which was the council’s opposition to the appointment, which reached the point of petitioning the High Court against him.

As mentioned, about three months ago the head of the Efrat local council Oded Ravibi and the council’s CEO Harel Tovi filed a petition to the High Court against Deputy Minister Matan Kahana and the Ministry of Religious Services regarding the appointment of Rabbi Shira Mirvis as the Ministry’s supervisor of the Efrat Religious Council. In a notice published on behalf of the High Court of Justice, it is written that the petition has been deleted.

In a Kipa News conversation with the head of the council, Oded Ravibi, he qualifies the postponement: “It is not entirely accurate that the High Court was postponed. What happened is that before submitting the petition it was not clear where we should submit it, and we turned to the state attorney’s office. We asked whether the petition should be addressed to the High Court or the Court of Administrative Affairs and they answered that it did not matter, and we chose to submit it to the High Court.”

“The state’s response was total disregard and it claimed that the petition should be referred to the Administrative Affairs Court,” he adds and clarifies: “Immediately after the holiday we will resubmit the petition to the Administrative Affairs Court. The state misled us.” Ravibi added: “We contacted the Ministry of Religion regarding the facts in the appointment process, and they are ignoring us. This is the fact that clearly raises the concern that an unkosher move has taken place here.”
