The new-gen strategy that rivals Hollywood movies is used by the smugglers to bring the drugs that are “blooming” in Africa to India. They are mainly delivered by sea. They have to pass a secret code to reach the middlemen in the open sea. Only after the specific code language or materials are transferred correctly, the “parcel” is given from the ship.
In May, heroin worth Rs 1500 crore smuggled in two fishing boats off the coast of Lakshadweep was seized by the DRI and the Coast Guard. 26 people were arrested that day. Those arrested said that it was handed over from an Iranian ship. A Singapore dollar note was used as the secret code that day. Often the traffickers do not have a clear idea of where the drugs are being taken or from where they are being brought. The only job is to get them to shore. The poor fishermen are also exploited by paying a meager amount for this. Even when they are caught, they know that they are smuggling drugs. They will only be given the GPS location of the ship’s anchorage. Once at the shore, there will be another team to take the parcel. So even if the smugglers are caught, the giant sharks will escape.
Arrested after closing
Drug trafficking from African countries like South Africa, Uganda, Kenya and Zimbabwe has increased after the spread of Covid. With the help of Pakistan, narcotic drugs are widely supplied to the country from Afghanistan and Iran. 22.5 kg of heroin worth Rs 158 crore seized from Balaramapuram last September was airlifted from Zimbabwe to Mumbai.
