DECRYPTION – The work of French researchers to facilitate diagnosis has received the Marcel Dassault Prize for innovation in psychiatry.

Seven to ten years is the average diagnostic wandering of patients with bipolar disorder. This serious chronic psychiatric illness is indeed often confused with depression, with which it shares some of the symptoms. Unfortunately, because of these misdiagnoses, antidepressants are sometimes prescribed. However, they are not suitable for bipolar disorder. Worse, they are even likely to aggravate the disease by delaying appropriate therapeutic management of the patient, with a risk of suicide as a result.

Accelerating the identification of patients is therefore a necessity and this is precisely what the Pr Raoul Belzeaux, professor of psychiatry at the University of Montpellier and psychiatrist at the University Hospital of Montpellier and the hospital center of Béziers.
