Bad weather “out of control” in Crete, one dead and two missing

by time news

Severe flooding on the island of Crete, in southern Greece, killed one person in the Heraklion region. The man in his 50s found himself trapped in his car when torrential rains began to hit the island.

Firefighters also announced two missing. A woman, also trapped in her car, was slightly injured. At least nine vehicles surrounded by water still need to be rescued. Eight tourists and a guard are also stuck in the archaeological museum of Sitia and have asked for help from the fire brigade.

Asked about the Skai television channel, the mayor of Sitia considered that “the situation was out of control and that these phenomena in the region were exceptional”. Local media also report extensive damage in seaside villages where the streets have become rivers carrying away everything in their path.
