Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, best known for his role in the Harry Potter film series, has died in a hospital near his home in Scotland. In recent years he was in poor health and used a wheelchair. He was 72 years old when he died. Coltrane played the character of Rubeus Hagrid, the groundskeeper at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter film series, which were released from 2001 to 2011.

After the announcement of his death, writer JK Rowling, author of the series, published words of consolation and farewell: “I will never know anyone like Robbie again.
