New Delhi ∙ India falls again in the Global Hunger Index (GHI). It ranks first in the world in child malnutrition with 19.3 percent.

India ranks 107th with a score of 29.1 in the index, which takes into account food availability at the national and regional levels among 121 countries. Afghanistan at 109th position is the only Asian country behind India. Pakistan (99), Bangladesh (84), Nepal (81) and Sri Lanka (64) are all far ahead of us. India was ranked 101st in 2021 and 94th in 2020.

22.4 crore people in India are undernourished. However, stunting among children has reduced from 38.7% in 2012–16 to 35.5% in 2017–21. Infant mortality decreased from 4.5% in 2014 to 3.3% in 2020.
