Wood Wood Life Store in Mitte: survive difficult times in style

by time news

In addition to Comme des Garçons shirts, this shop also sells screwdrivers and garden shovels. That is probably a specialist shop for all situations.

In this shop, customers can expect a cross-genre range of everyday goods. Wood Wood

The range of products in the Wood Wood Life Store seems a bit bizarre: room lamps, camping cutlery, garden shovels, perfume, sneakers. All this and much more lies peacefully mixed up on the shelves here. Nevertheless, the range follows a common thread, and it winds along the likes and interests of Brian SS Jensen and Karl-Oskar Olsen, the two men behind the Wood Wood brand. The two Danes like hiking, but they also like it nice and cozy at home – and they are sticking to their old love for the “Play” line by Comme des Garçons, which was already available for sale in their very first Berlin Wood-Wood store .

After opening in Rochstraße in 2008, that store was also one of the first in the city where you could buy Japanese T-shirts and cardigans with almond-eyed hearts. In the district around Hackescher Markt, fashion-conscious Mitte residents used to shop for Acne jeans at Murkudis and cargo pants at Carhartt. It was the time when ’90s clubwear faded from the scene, giving way to branded streetwear and a new Scandinavian rigor. A mixture that the label Wood Wood has offered from the beginning to this day.

Founded in 2002, the fashion brand fuses Danish design with the vibe of the street – both in its own collections and those of other brands that are distributed through in-house stores. To this day, this concept works so well that Wood Wood is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. This is a noteworthy achievement in turbulent times – which was perhaps also achieved because the company never expanded excessively, but has, for example, limited itself to a few flagship stores worldwide to this day.

The newly designed Wood Wood Life Store on Rochstrasse mainly sells products from Denmark and Japan.Clara Renner

In Berlin, there are at least two Wood-Wood shops on Rochstrasse, almost right next to each other. Clothing and accessories are sold in one, and the new Life Store now presents its range in the other. This currently consists of checked bed linen from Kvadrat, decorative care products from Seymor, perfumes in beautiful bottles from Comme des Garçons or Stora Skuggan, collectible Be@rbrick sculptures, camping mugs from Snow Peak, delicate crockery from Hay and much more.

And anyone who suspects a connection to the brand name in the woody interior of the newly designed Life Store is right: Wood Wood owes its existence to a T-shirt sale that took place in a setting roughly made of wood and the organizers at the time created their own collection inspired. Here’s to the next 20 years, knock on wood!

ABOUT

In 2002, Karl-Oskar Olsen, Brian SS Jensen, Magnus Carstensen and Mikael Lunøe founded the Wood Wood brand by opening a small shop in an old wine warehouse on Krystalgade street in central Copenhagen. Mainly limited edition T-shirts with screen-printed motifs were sold there. The following year the shirts were available in the world’s leading concept stores such as Colette (Paris), Barneys (New York) and Corso Como (Milan). Store openings and brand collaborations followed, including with Adidas, Neighborhood, Barbour and Katharine Hamnett. The first Berlin store was opened in 2008, and the Wood Wood Life Store has been around since 2022. To this day, the two founders, Olsen and Jensen, are behind Wood Wood, and Cecilie Liv is the creative director.
