Many rock bands are characterized by a career that knows quite a few ups and downs, so does the Red Hot Chili Peppers. After not hearing much from them for six years, they are now looking to explode back, and in a big way. But the less good news is that the new album doesn’t exactly answer that. In fact, it kind of misses the mark.
This is the band’s longest album, which includes no less than 17 songs. Although one gets the feeling that the band creates the music first for themselves, a practice and experience that probably gives them quite a bit of pleasure and fun, all of this does not exactly pass to the audience. Yes, not even for the veterans among them.
First, there is nothing particularly new in the album in question, they fail to cross the familiar funky line, even if for a moment there are small winks in the direction of pop. “Return Of The Dream Canteen” sounds a bit like an album of leftovers, or more precisely, a kind of pasted copy of previous works. Still, for die-hard fans, it’s still a celebration.
In conclusion, Red Hot doesn’t reinvent the wheel or step out of their comfort zone on the new album, but it’s still worth listening to, and if you’re a fan of the legendary band, it’s likely that there will be at least a few songs that you can especially enjoy. Still, there are 17 of them.
