Thiruvananthapuram > Health Minister Veena George has said that the preventive measures have been intensified in the context of reports of new genetic variant of Covid (XBB, XBB1) in different parts of the world. Instructions have been given to all districts. The new strain is more contagious than any other strain of Covid-19 so far. Hence the resistance is strengthened. About 1.8 percent of those infected may require hospital treatment. There is no cause for concern at present. But everyone should be careful. Everyone should wear mask properly for self protection. Masks must be worn by the elderly and those with co-morbidities. The minister requested that masks should be worn at the airport and in closed places.

A high-level meeting was convened under the leadership of the Minister to assess the precautions and arrangements of the Health Department. The meeting assessed that the cases of covid in the state are generally decreasing. Currently, the number of Covid cases is less than a thousand. Samples are regularly sent to check for the presence of the covid genetic variant. In the new case, more samples will be sent for genetic testing. The minister directed to monitor hospital admissions, beds and ICU utilization accurately.

As influenza cases and covid are reported, guidelines are issued for those presenting with influenza-like symptoms.

The elderly and those with co-morbidities are more likely to be severely affected by the new covid variant. So they should be more careful. Elderly, healthcare workers and people with co-morbidities must take a precautionary dose.
