A special fire and rescue investigation team, in cooperation with police MZP investigators, determined today (Monday) that the fire that occurred over the weekend in Kiryat Tivon, in which 80-year-old Mayra Tal Aha died, and her 79-year-old husband Itamar was injured in a moderate condition – caused by the fire of Shabbat candles.

The investigation team again called on the public to beware of unattended fires.

Israel Fire and Rescue spokesmen in the Hoof District said: “A special investigation team of the Israel Police and Fire and Rescue determined that the cause of the fire last Friday in a residential building in Kiryat Tivon, in which Mayra Tal died and her husband Itamar Tal was seriously injured, was caused by Shabbat candles that ignited.”

The report on the fire was received by MDA on Saturday night. When the forces arrived at the house, the woman was pronounced dead.

MDA paramedic, Saleh Tabash, said: “When we arrived at the scene, we saw thick smoke coming from the house. An 80-year-old man who was rescued was conscious and suffering from smoke inhalation. We gave him medical treatment that included oxygen and evacuated him in moderate and stable condition for further treatment in the hospital. After finishing the firefighting operations, we entered the house and saw an 80-year-old woman with severe burns on her body with no signs of life, and we had no choice but to determine her death.”

The husband is hospitalized in a stable condition at Rambam Hospital in Haifa.

Tal’s funeral will take place tomorrow (Tuesday) at 17:00 at the cemetery in Kiryat Tivon.
