Chennai: Indian Communist State Secretary I. Mutharasan has demanded that an investigation should be conducted regarding the Punjab Governor’s statement that the post of Deputy Chancellor was sold in Tamil Nadu.

In this regard, in a statement released by the State Secretary of the Communist Party of India Mutharasan, “Punjab Governor Panwarilal Purohit has publicly complained that the post of Vice Chancellor in Tamil Nadu has been sold for up to Rs 50 crores.

He has served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu for more than four years. He told reporters that 27 vice-chancellors were appointed during that time. A “complaint” made by a constitutionally empowered high official cannot be passed off as mere news.

The government of Tamil Nadu should thoroughly investigate the allegations of corruption made publicly by the former governor of Tamil Nadu. An inquiry should be conducted into the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in the past. It should be confirmed that mistakes have been made and those sitting on the post of Vice-Chancellor in corrupt practices should be fired immediately.

Those involved in corruption should be punished without escaping the grip of the law. The Tamil Nadu government should develop appropriate mechanisms to ensure that the appointment of vice-chancellors in future is transparent and free from corruption and irregularities. The power to appoint the Vice-Chancellor should be removed from the Governor and given to the People’s Representative Government,” he said in the statement.
