Israel is ranked 16th in the world in the UN Global Innovation Index for 2022

WIPO (the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organization) published the Global Innovation Index (GII) report for 2022. The report ranks the capabilities and performance of the innovation systems of 132 economies in the world. The index is a ranking of capabilities and results The Innovation of World Economies It measures innovation based on criteria including institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, credit, investment, linkages; creation, absorption and diffusion of knowledge; and creative outputs.

An important parameter, which is weighted in the ranking calculation, is the proportion of patent applications submitted and how they are handled. In the GII report for 2022, Israel was ranked 1st in the list of the leading countries in the world in submitting international applications for patent registration, and this out of the 152 member countries of the Patent Cooperation Treaty. The Patent Authority of the Ministry of Justice, believing in the relationship with WIPO, places great emphasis on these parameters, thus contributing to the promotion of Israel’s position in this important innovation ranking.

In addition, Israel ranks 15th out of 48 high-income economies, and first out of 19 economies in North Africa and West Asia. Cyprus is second in this category, followed by the United Arab Emirates and Turkey. Israel is a leader in market sophistication (7th place), business sophistication (6th place) and knowledge and technology outputs (7th place).

It is a world leader in indicators for venture capital transactions, and in the employment of women with advanced degrees. In the field of PCT patents and the export of ICT (Information & Communication Technology) services, Israel ranks first in the world for each of them. Israel is also the only country that spends more than 5% of GDP on research and development, reaching 5.4% in 2020.

Looking at economies with the highest ranking in the GII for 2022, the USA leads in first place, Singapore in second place, and Israel in third place together with China and Hong Kong: China leads in the field of trademarks, Hong Kong leads in the field of high-tech imports and Israel leads in the field of research and development expenditures.

In the relationship between income level and innovation performance, Israel’s performance at the level of development is higher than expected and it produces outputs in the field of innovation above expectations, in light of the invested inputs.
