Hong Kong: China to review law aimed at providing more protection to women against gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. After third revision and extensive public comment, the legislative bill was submitted to China’s parliament. The decision to enact the legislation came as a result of concerns shared by activists over the government’s traditional stance on women’s worth, increased activity against women’s rights and growing opposition to issues such as abortion. But it is not clear what changes are there in the revised law and what are the changes that protect women’s rights.

For the first time in 30 years, China is considering revising its women’s protection law. The National People’s Congress (NCP) Stranding Committee has tabled the bill, the Law for the Protection of Women’s Rights and Interests, according to official news agency Xinhua. The NPC said on its website that the latest draft has not been made available to the public, but they have sent suggestions for what they want to see in the law. Xinhua noted that the bill strengthens the protection of the interests and rights of the poor, elderly and disabled disadvantaged women. Violation of women’s employment and social security rights and interests will result in strong action. Meanwhile, preventing the rescue of women trafficked as part of human trafficking is a crime. The law also clarifies the responsibilities of local authorities to rescue trafficked women, the news agency said. Pictures of a woman in chains were posted on social media earlier this year. The images sparked a debate about human trafficking in China and many protests. There were many angry demonstrations, especially as human trafficking has been a major problem in many villages over the years. There is currently no date set for the legislative bill to become law.
