Spotify boss announces upcoming price hike

by time news

Price increases are at this stage qualified as “probable”. In an interview given to Wall Street Journalthe boss of Spotify Daniel Ek announces that the music streaming firm should modify its price list, starting next year.

It is still unclear at this stage how the price of subscriptions will actually evolve. It is therefore unclear whether or not the music streaming platform will dare to touch the price of the classic and individual subscription, currently offered at 9.90 euros per month. Passing the ten euro mark could offend many users, even if competitors Apple Music and Deezer have already passed the mark.

195 million paying subscribers worldwide

For good reason, during previous price increases, which did not concern France, Spotify had decided to only touch the price of its family and student offers. The price of the family subscription had increased from 15.99 euros to 17.99 euros in certain countries, while the student offer had increased by one euro, to reach 4.99 euros.

Spotify released its quarterly financial results on Wednesday. The opportunity for the firm to take stock of the number of subscribers. It currently has 195 million paid subscribers worldwide, and 456 million users, including those who downloaded the app only for the free offer with ads.
