Marco Antonio, 32, was fatally shot by accident while strolling with his new wife outside a church in the city of Caborca, Mexico, as cartel wars raged in the country. The couple headed towards their wedding vehicle around 5:00 pm on Saturday, when an unknown person who appeared at the scene opened fire.

Frightened guests rushed to help the two, when several bullets hit the groom. Shocking footage showed the couple’s family and friends panicking as paramedics tried to save Antonio.

State authorities have not confirmed whether the incident was related to organized crime or the city’s cartel wars. According to them: “Antonio was killed by a direct attack and not by accident.” The prosecutor’s office added: “The attack against him was directed at another person who also got married at the same time in another city. We will investigate the case, fully clarify the facts and find those actually responsible.”

According to authorities, another person was shot multiple times at another wedding that night. The state’s governor, Alfonso Durazo, said: “This was an attack aimed at a specific person. Mexico’s drug wars are believed to be responsible for approximately 300,000 deaths since 2006, including some of the most horrific cases imaginable.”
