In New York, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, Archbishop Gabriele Cacha said that space exploration and its utilization should be to improve peaceful relations between nations.

He was speaking on Friday (28/10/22) at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly on the topic of international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.

Archbishop Kacha said that space-related research studies and its utilization are giving a new dimension to human life and the horizons of our common home are gradually expanding. At the same time, he expressed concern that the region of space closest to Earth is being filled with satellites and satellite debris.

Archbishop Kacha, therefore, pointed out the need to try to eliminate and prevent the generation of satellite debris and expressed his happiness that the increasing number of reusable space launch systems is a welcome trend. Likewise, Archbishop Cacha said the balance between scientific research and commercial interests is important, and while the development of satellites brings benefits to many, their clustering makes it difficult for astronomers to observe distant stars and planets unobstructed.

He stated that space is a public good and this means that the benefits of the peaceful use of space should accrue to all nations, regardless of their level of development.
