American traveler’s cameras lost 85 years ago… buried treasure

Famous American explorer Bradford Washburn’s cameras and equipment have been found abandoned in Canada’s Yukon Glacier 85 years ago.

Bradford Washburn was the founder, photographer, cartographer, and director of the Boston Museum of Science in Massachusetts. He was very interested in mountain climbing and used to take pictures of it and collect it.

In 1937, Washburn, along with three other climbers, attempted the ascent of Mount Lucania, Canada’s third highest peak at 5,226 meters (17,145 ft). At the time it was the highest peak in North America.

The sudden change in climate at that time has made it difficult to climb the mountain. Washburn and fellow American mountaineer Robert Bates had to abandon their camera and equipment midway. As it is a place where there is heavy snowfall, the equipment is covered with snow.

85 years later, a team led by Teton Gravity Research, now a sports video producer, traveled to Kluan Park in the Yukon Territory with the goal of locating the lost cameras and other equipment.

Accordingly Bradford Washburn’s cameras and trekking equipment have been recovered. Pictures from his historically important buried camera show what the mountains looked like 85 years ago.
