Iran’s Revolutionary Guards took control of a foreign tanker this morning (Monday), which the Iranians claim was trying to smuggle 11 million liters of fuel from the Persian Gulf. According to the reports in the state media in Iran, the captain and crew of the tanker were arrested and taken for questioning.

In recent months there have been many attempts to smuggle fuel from Iran to other countries in the Persian Gulf region. The increase in smuggling cases is mainly due to the cheap fuel prices in the country, which come as a result of an extensive government subsidy, as well as against the background of the drop in the value of the Iranian national currency in light of the international sanctions.
