The elections in Brazil: the left led by Lula defeated the incumbent president by a minor margin

by time news

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will be the next president of Brazil. Lula served as president of Brazil from 2003-2010 and was barred from running in the previous elections in 2018 after he was sent to prison a year earlier following a corruption scandal. About two years after he was sent to prison, Lola was released and acquitted, at the beginning of his victory speech he said: “They tried to bury me alive and here I am.” Lula announced that he would focus on unifying the people (which led his election platform) and said that he would take care of all citizens and not just those who voted for him: “This country needs peace and unity. The population does not want to fight anymore,” he added.

The battle was close and recognition of the results will be tested – As mentioned, Lula won 50.9% of the votes, a tiny difference compared to the incumbent President Bolsonaro, and when the two contestants are at opposite ends of the political spectrum, there are concerns that the right-wing voters will not recognize the election results. Last year, Bolsonaro already talked about the possibility that he would refuse to accept the election results in the face of false claims regarding the reliability of the electronic election system. According to Reuters, Bolsonaro was apparently out of trouble during the day.

“I send my congratulations to Luiz Lula da Silva on his election as the next president of Brazil, after a free, reliable and fair election,” President Biden congratulated Lula while announcing the reliability of the election and trying to rule out any projection of doubt on the matter. “I look forward to working together on continued cooperation between our two countries in the coming months and years,” Biden added. It should be noted that the ousted president, Bolsonaro, never congratulated Biden on his election victory in 2020 and is a close friend of former president Donald Trump.

Lula’s election comes together with other victories of the left in South America – this was also the case in Cambodia and Chile. In addition to the focus on the unification of the people, Lula promised to fight the destruction of the Amazon forests and he aims to put Brazil at the top of the leading countries in the fight against the climate crisis. The new president will have a lot of work to do, also with regard to the climate crisis, but uniting the people in this period will not be easy at all while the world is in a severe energy crisis, raging inflation and a strengthening dollar. His promises will probably not hold water without a serious stabilization of the Brazilian economy, when inflation there is also more than 8.5% as of September.
