Mancheri: Defending champions Gokulam Kerala FC will play their first seven matches of the I League at Payyanad Stadium, Mancheri. The first match is against last year’s runner-up Mohammedans Sporting. Kickoff is on November 12 at 4:30 p.m. Kozhikode Corporation Stadium will be the venue for six matches. It is the first time since the Covid-19 that I-League home away matches will be held with spectators allowed.

Gokulam, who have won the I-League title for the last two consecutive years, is training under the tutelage of Cameroon coach Richard Towa this time. Other I-League clubs are Aizawl FC, Real Kashmir, Srinidhi FC, Kenkere FC, Sudeva Delhi FC, Rajasthan United FC, Round Glass Punjab FC, Travu FC and Churchill Brothers FC.

In the thrilling final at Payyanad Stadium, Kerala won the seventh title by defeating Bengal 5-4 in the penalty shootout. Kerala fought back after trailing by a goal in overtime. Kerala was crowned under the coaching of Bino George without losing a single game in the tournament. Kerala captain Jijo Joseph was selected as the best player in the last tournament. This is Kerala’s first title on home soil since Kurikesh Mathew’s team became champions in Kochi in 1993.

While Bengal’s Sajal missed the second kick in the penalty shootout, Kerala’s kicks all hit the net. Sanju, Bibin, captain Jijo Joseph, Jason and Jessin scored for Kerala in the shootout. This is Kerala’s third title as hosts and first since 2018. Before this, Kerala won the title as hosts in 1973 and 1993 in Kochi.
