A century ago, archeology and the study of the history of ancient Egypt marked a pivotal date, thanks to the discovery in the Valley of the Kings of tomb of pharaoh Tutankhamun. It was exactly November 4, 1922, when the team led by the British archaeologist Howard Carter found the entrance to one of the most precious treasures in the world, cataloged with the alphanumeric code KV62.
The burial of the young pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, who ascended the throne at just 9 years old and died when he was only 18, is one of the few found practically intact, with all its treasure and certainly the richest. The tomb complex is a hypogeum about eight meters deep.
A staircase of 16 steps leads to a corridor which in turn leads into an antechamber from which the access to the burial chamber opens with the sarcophagi containing the pharaoh’s mummy, from which one enters the treasure chamber, in which – three years after the discovery of the tomb, on 25 October 1225 – the famous funerary mask of Tutankhamun was found in solid gold and lapis lazuli, which reproduces the face of the young pharaoh.
