New Delhi: The 2022/23 I-League football season will begin on the 12th of this month in Malappuram. In the opening match, defending champions Gokulam Kerala FC will face off against runners-up Mohammadan Sporting. The team that wins this season will be promoted to the ISL. 12 teams will participate in the league which will last till March. In the last two seasons, the I-League was held in Kolkata, Kalyani and Naihati following the Kovid protocol. With the change of covid restrictions, this time the competition will be held in 13 venues. Gokulam Kerala’s six home matches will be played at Payyanad Stadium in Malappuram. Five matches will also be held at EMS Stadium in Kozhikode. Payyanad had a huge turnout in the last Santosh Trophy final round matches.
