NEW DELHI: The lawyer appearing for businessman Vijay Mallya has appealed to the Supreme Court seeking his release from the case as there has been no information from him for a long time.

Vijay Mallya, 66, a businessman from Bengaluru, Karnataka, ran a liquor empire through ‘UP Group’. He started a private airline company called ‘Kingfisher Airlines’ and took loans of up to 9,000 crore rupees from various banks. He fled abroad without repaying this amount.

It was revealed that he was hiding in London, the capital of Britain, a European country. The case is being investigated in the country’s court. The central government is trying to extradite Mallya.

The Enforcement Directorate seized properties belonging to Vijay Mallya and his relatives. Vijay Mallya filed a petition against this in the Supreme Court in New Delhi.

Apart from the assets of the ‘Kingfisher’ company, he sought a stay on the seizure of properties belonging to him and his relatives. The hearing on this petition is going on in the Supreme Court.

The petition came up for hearing again yesterday. The lawyer appearing for Mallya said, ‘There has been no communication from Vijay Mallya for a long time. So we want to get rid of the case. He requested that the court should allow the necessary procedures to be started.

Allowing this, the judges ordered Mallya’s ‘e-mail’ and home address to be filed with the court registrar within a week.
