Chilean Senate Lacks Votes to Impeach President

by time news

On Tuesday, the Chilean Senate voted to impeach the country’s president, Sebastian Pinere, who was involved in the scandal with the so-called Pandora dossier, a published database of offshore accounts of a number of world politicians. 24 senators voted for impeachment, 18 against, one abstained. However, this was not enough to begin the procedure for removing the head of state from power – according to Chilean laws, the decision on impeachment must receive the support of at least 29 senators.

Chile’s prosecutors opened an investigation against the country’s president in early October. The attention of prosecutors was attracted by the scheme published in the “Pandora dossier” according to which the president’s children sold their shares in the mining company Minera Dominga to an entrepreneur close to the president. A significant part of the transaction went through offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands. In a bribery case, Mr. Piñera could face up to five years in prison.

The impeachment procedure was launched by the Chilean opposition, which has long accused the president of corruption, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at $ 2.8 billion.
