Bahrain: The Bahraini parliament has passed a draft bill that would allow jobs to be given only to Bahrainis. Bahrainis are required to work only in government-owned companies and companies in which the government owns more than 50 percent of the company. The draft bill was passed by Parliament. The government should conduct a study on this within six months. It was then suggested that it should be left for the consideration of the National Assembly.

Foreigners can be hired on a temporary contract basis only if they do not find qualified Bahrainis for the job. The issue was hotly debated in Parliament yesterday during the presentation of the Bill. The Bahraini government has come up with such a provision to address unemployment in the country. Ministers should take strong action in this regard. Mohammed al-Abbasi criticized that many still do not understand the seriousness of the issue.

In Bahrain, there are more foreigners in business than locals. Most of them have come to Bahrain from many countries and built their businesses. International treaties stipulate that there should be no discrimination. Authorities now aim to find employment for Bahrainis eligible for various positions.
