Increased risk of heart problems with ibrutinib

There is an increased risk of serious cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure in patients taking ibrutinib. This is more common in elderly patients, patients with pre-existing heart problems, or those at risk for heart problems. This is according to studies by the manufacturer of ibrutinib.

Ibrutinib is used to treat types of leukemia and lymphoma.

It is advised to monitor cardiac function before and during treatment with ibrutinib. In case of heart problems the dose must be adjusted. In some cases, ibrutinib should be discontinued.
