During the trial, the accused admitted that she stabbed a rapist to death after suffering a fit of rage about two years ago after he raped her several times when she was 15. The prosecutors did not dispute that Lewis was a victim of sex trafficking, but claimed that at the time of the murder, the rapist did not pose an immediate threat. Based on this, the court sentenced the accused to five years in prison and a fine of 150,000 dollars to be paid to the family of the murdered rapist.

A GoFundMe campaign created to help the accused pay the damages has so far raised more than half a million dollars.
