An unusual letter: Fighters from the 155th Brigade of the Marine Corps in Russia’s Pacific Fleet, who were stationed on the front line in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, sent a letter this week in which they complained that they were thrown into “unstructured” battles against their will and suffered heavy defeats, just so that their commanders would be appreciated in battle their superiors.

“Once again, we embarked on an illogical battle at the command of General Mordov, and this is so that he can earn bonuses from Valery Gerasimov (Chief of the General Staff in Russia),” the fighters wrote. “As a result of the ‘carefully’ planned attack, we lost about 300 of our men. In addition, 50% of our equipment was destroyed. And this is what happens only in our brigade. The district commanders falsify and change the real statistics and omit the facts, for fear of having to take responsibility for their actions. The letter, which is addressed to Oleg Kozhmiako, the governor of the Pretoria region in eastern Russia, was received by him and he did not deny its legitimacy, but claimed that the extent of the losses indicated in the letter was exaggerated.
