Vietnam has taken home more than 300 Sri Lankan refugees rescued from a sunken ship off the coast of Singapore.
According to the country’s information, 264 men, 19 women and 20 children who sought asylum in Canada have been rescued.
According to reports, the rescued refugees were taken to the port of Vietnam last night (08) at 7 o’clock.
Refusal to go back to Sri Lanka
According to information available from there, the rescued Sri Lankan refugees have been accommodated in a temporary camp in Vietnam.
Refugees who were taken to Vietnam were given food and medical aid before being taken to the camp.
Rescued Sri Lankan refugees have told the Vietnamese authorities that they tried to go to Canada as refugees in a situation where they could not overcome the economic crisis in the country.
Reports indicate that the said Sri Lankan refugees are refusing to go back to Sri Lanka.
However, information from the Ministry of External Affairs indicates that steps have now been taken to bring the rescued Sri Lankan refugees back to the country as soon as possible.
