Endangered seals die in droves on Caspian coast

Endangered seals die in droves on Caspian Sea coast. A spokesman for the Ministry of Environment said that more than 130 dead seals washed up on the western coast. He added that the soil and water samples of the area will be tested.

Caspian seals live in the world’s largest inland body of water, the Caspian Sea. In November 2020, the government of Kazakhstan included these seals in the list of endangered species. The Caspian Sea is surrounded by five countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan.

Pollution is also contributing to the demise of seals, an animal that has suffered from overhunting for decades. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than one million Caspian seals in the Caspian Sea. Experts say there are only 68,000 seals left here.
