Surgeons in France have successfully grown a nose out of a woman’s hand and attached it to her face after she lost a large part of it during cancer treatment.

Treatment of cancer

The woman from Toulouse lost part of her nose in 2013 after being treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy for Nasal Cavity Cancer.

He lived without a nose for many years after failed attempts at artificial nose and nose reconstruction.

A new nose

But now, through a new medical procedure, he has been able to get a new nose, which has also grown on his own body.

A custom nose made of a 3D-printed biomaterial instead of cartilage was made for him and then attached to his forearm.

Doctors then used skin taken from the side of his forehead to cover the 3D-printed nose. It was allowed to grow for two months, after which it was removed from the woman’s arm and transplanted to her face.

Toulouse Hospital

Toulouse University Hospital (CHU) shared pictures of the nose growing on the forearm on its Facebook page. A new nose was implanted on the woman’s face on Tuesday, the hospital announced.

Doctors used a microsurgical technique to connect blood vessels in the skin of the arm to blood vessels in the woman’s face.

After 10 days in the hospital and three weeks of antibiotics, doctors said she was doing very well.
