Yesterday (Friday) a majority of 98 countries in the UN Committee on Politics and Decolonization approved the Palestinian proposal calling for an investigation by the UN International Court of Justice into the “legal significance of the ongoing Israeli occupation”.

While in Israel they condemned the decision and Prime Minister Yair Lapid said that “supporting the Palestinian movement is a reward for the terrorist organizations and the anti-Israeli campaign”, in the Hamas organization they celebrated. Hamas welcomed the decision of the UN Assembly to receive a legal opinion from the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the continuation of Israel’s stay in the West Bank. A senior Hamas official, Izat al-Rishek, said today that the organization appreciates all diplomatic efforts that support the rights of the Palestinian people.

“To continue these efforts and to refuse any Zionist-American pressures that are exerted on her,” called A-Rishek. He sent a message to the countries that voted in favor of the decision and said that Hamas “condemns the position of the countries that opposed the decision and leaned towards the occupation and the false narrative.”

The meaning of the resolution passed today, if it is passed by the vote in the UN General Assembly, is that Resolution 242 of the Security Council, that the conflict should end through negotiations on the basis of territories in exchange for peace, is not taking place, and in practice it is a permanent situation, meaning that Israel has annexed the territories in practice.
