Israel abstained tonight from voting at the United Nations on a resolution calling for reparations to Ukraine following the Russian invasion. Israel abstained this evening (Monday) from voting at the United Nations on a resolution calling for reparations to Ukraine following the Russian invasion. It seems that the Israeli abstention is a form of revenge against the Ukrainians, due to their support for the decision at the United Nations this weekend to appeal to the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the Israeli occupation. This is supported by the fact that the two votes, this evening and the one that took place at the weekend, were held in the Fourth Committee of the United Nations, which deals with the issues of “politics and decolonization”, as reported by Itamar Eichner on the Ynet website.

According to the report, Israel is the only country in the Western world that abstained from voting, and among others the USA and all EU countries supported the call for reparations to Ukraine. 94 countries supported the decision, 13 opposed and 74 abstained. Along with Israel, African countries, Lebanon and India abstained from voting.

As you may recall, the UN’s Special Committee on Politics and Decolonization last Friday approved a Palestinian proposal, calling for an urgent opinion of the UN’s International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the “ongoing Israeli occupation”. In fact, the meaning of the decision is that the International Court of Justice will judge Israel. 98 countries voted in favor, 17 opposed, 52 abstained.

Ukraine and Russia voted in favor of the Palestinian proposal, as did the Arab countries, including those that maintain relations with Israel such as the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Egypt. “Each country that supported the resolution killed the chance of reconciliation and contributed to the perpetuation of the conflict,” said UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan after the vote.
