a first application launched to track fraud

Odopass, a platform that supports motorists in the purchase or resale of used vehicles, is inspired by a solution duplicated in Belgium.

Fight the scourge of scams. This is the challenge for Odopass, which is launching its first metered anti-fraud application in France. For this platform, which already specializes in the purchase and resale of used vehicles, the market remains very «opaque» with a risk, for buyers, of coming across an inaccurate odometer. According to Odopass, this practice concerns 600,000 cars – 20% of the second-hand fleet – each year in France. And allows you to increase the value of a vehicle to better resell it. The company has therefore decided to duplicate a solution already tested in Belgium and which has reduced the number of frauds there by 0.2%. While the technical control of a car is only compulsory every two years in France, a seller can modify his counter during this period. This can expose him to a two-year prison sentence and a fine of 37,500 euros.

How will this new method work? Thanks to the application, vehicle owners will be able to certify their meter free of charge, at any time. Odopass claims to be able “guarantee the traceability and authenticity of the odometer readings of more than 300,000 used cars”. To do this, an individual will have to certify his profile using an identity document and a gray card to guarantee that he is the owner of the vehicle. Odopass therefore recommends entering your mileage regularly each month by photographing your counter. These photos will then be stored in the blockchain, which ensures their inalterability. A process that would in fine to better value the mileage during a sale or trade-in. Odopass also opens its service to professionals such as garages and mechanics so that the vehicles in question are certified.
