A review petition has been filed on behalf of the Central Government challenging the acquittal of 6 people including Nalini who were sentenced to life imprisonment in the case of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
On 11th, the Supreme Court of India had acquitted 6 people including Nalini.
According to this, Nalini, Jayakumar, RP Ravichandran, Robert Byas, Sudendraraja and Sriharan were released from jail.
In this matter, the Supreme Court had already said that according to the verdict given on May 18 to release another prisoner, Perariwalan, six more should be released.
In this situation, the central government has filed a review petition against this judgment. The petition stated that this order was issued without hearing their side.
Rajeev murder case
Former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a bomb attack in Sriperumbudur near Chennai on May 21, 1991. India’s Central Intelligence Agency (CBI) found that members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were involved in the murder.
Acting as a human bomb, Tanu died on the spot. Sivarasan, Suba and others, whom the CBI found to be behind the murder conspiracy, died after consuming cyanide while the police surrounded their house in Bengaluru. LTTE leader Prabhakaran and intelligence chief Pottu Amman were declared guilty of absconding.
Apart from them, 26 accused persons including Perariwalan were sentenced to death on January 28, 1998 by the special court set up for this purpose. The convicts appealed to the Supreme Court. The bench headed by Justice KT Thomas, which investigated this, upheld the death sentence for only four persons namely Nalini, Chandan, Murugan and Perarivalan.
Robert Pius, Jayakumar and Ravichandran had their sentences reduced to life imprisonment. One was acquitted. The court said the other 18 had committed less serious offenses than those charged.
They were released considering the time they had been in jail till then. Out of the remaining 7 people who were sentenced to death, the sentence of 4 people was first reduced to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court in 2014. Among them, Perariwalan was released last May. The other 6 were released after the verdict on the 11th
