Even big critics didn’t understand the genre of that movie, it shocked me: Jeethu Joseph

Jeethu Joseph is a director known for his suspense thrillers in Malayalam cinema. The director says that Drishyam, which has thrilled the audience, is not a thriller.

Released in 2015, Drishyam was a huge success in theatres. The film was taken up by the family audience as well. Drishyam was the first film to enter the 50 crore club in Malayalam.

“Drushyam is not a thriller film. I see it as a family drama. When we say thriller, we mean memories. 12th Man was done in between but it is an investigation film. Uzham is an action movie.

Looking at it like that, Memories is the only thriller movie. Drishyam 2 is never a thriller. If it seems so, it is a matter of everyone’s point of view. Finally I gave in to what people said. Agreed that Drishyam is a family thriller,’ said Jeethu Joseph in an interview to Kaumudi Movies.

There is no particular definition for a thriller film. You can define the movie by having a pattern. Thriller movies are movies that have a combination of family and emotion, serial killers, etc. Such movies are a different mood.

Even many big critics did not understand what the genre of 12th Man movie was. It was a big surprise for me. It happens because of the difference in the way everyone perceives the film,’ said Jeethu Joseph in response to a question on how to define thriller films.

Jeethu Joseph’s latest film is Kooman starring Asif Ali. Ranji Panicker, Hanna Kosi and Jafar Idukki are the other main characters in the film. Kooman received good response in the theatre.
