DECRYPTION – Public Health France has counted 2,800 more deaths in the departments affected.

Last summer was the second hottest recorded in France since the beginning of the XXe century. Three waves of heat waves successively hit France in June, July and August. Some departments such as Vaucluse or Drôme even accumulated more than 20 days. It is now time to take stock of the health situation, because heat is an important mortality factor, as the 2003 heat wave had taught us harshly and its 14,800 deaths over three weeks.

During the three heat waves of 2022, the excess mortality from all causes combined at the national level is estimated at 2,816 deaths, i.e. a relative excess mortality of + 17% in the departments concerned, explains Public Health France (SPF). This includes deaths induced directly by heat, but also by other unusual factors, in particular, for the summer of 2022, the Covid epidemic (directly responsible for 894 deaths).
