Watch: A sneak peek at the new Avatar, a sequel to the highest-grossing film in history

Exactly 13 years ago, the movie “Avatar” came out, and made history. The American science fiction film was released in 2009 and was a cinematic breakthrough, when it was released in an innovative 3D format.

The iconic film was ranked as the most profitable film in history, overtaking “Titanic” – which was ranked first until then. After a decade, the movie “Avengers: Endgame” took the first place, but the director James Cameron did not let it fall from its greatness, and brought about a re-release of the movie in Swords of the World, which returned it to the highest grossing movie of all time.

On December 14, the sequel “Avatar: The Path of Water” was released in theaters. The film tells the story of the Sally family (Jake, Naytiri and their children), the troubles they face, the effort they make to protect each other, their struggle to stay alive and the tragedies that accompany them.

The first film was nominated for nine Oscars and won three, as well as two Golden Globe Awards and nine Saturn Awards. Its budget is estimated at 237 million dollars, and its revenues are over 2.8 billion dollars.

The film is produced by the Walt Disney Company, who announced a decade ago that they were working on four sequels. The second and third sequels were filmed in New Zealand, and have already been completed, so the complex editing work remains.

The production decided to release a new film every two years, so the third film was released only in 2024, the fourth in 2026 and the fifth in 2028.
