Namakkal: “The manufactured pieces, worth Rs 300 crore, have stagnated without sales. The Tamil Nadu government should purchase them and take steps to give two pieces each to the ration card holders as Pongal gifts,” said Singaram, former treasurer of the Vennandur Powerloom Association.

He said about this:

In Salem and Namakkal districts, powerloom industry is predominant. The industry has been facing a major setback for the past few years.

As export textile orders are low, modern power weavers are engaged in piece production. Because of that, piece production has gone up tremendously.

In this case, the piece has stagnated without sales. In Namakkal and Salem districts alone, textiles have stagnated to the tune of 300 crore rupees. Due to that, a situation has arisen where it is not possible to continue the power loom industry.

As a Pongal gift to the people of Tamil Nadu, the ration card holders should be given two pieces and the Tamil Nadu government should purchase the manufactured pieces. By doing so, the livelihood of the weavers will increase.

This is what he said.
