After losing to the England team in a game that included a flood of goals and ended with the result 6:2, the Iranian team today (Friday) showed a much improved ability in the game against Wales – and managed to win the result 2:0 after a stormy game, which ended with two dramatic goals in the last minutes.

Even before the opening whistle came a significant event – this time the Iranian players sang the national anthem before the start of the game. Remember, in the previous game, the Iranians refused to sing the national anthem as part of the growing protest in the country against the Ayatollah regime.

Throughout the first half, the Iranians pressed a lot with the ball, but still failed to put it in the net and went into the break with a 0:0 draw. Even in the second half, Iran continued to attack, but the most significant moment of the game came a few minutes to the end: when Tarmi ran alone with the ball towards the goal, the Wales goalkeeper came out of the box and kicked him in the chest in a dangerous way. At first the referee gave him a yellow card, but after a VAR check he realized that the red card was inevitable – and he sent the goalkeeper away.

Following this, substitute goalkeeper Warren entered between the posts, and Aaron Ramsey went to the bench. Wales remained with ten players for the last minutes of the game and for the 9 minutes of added time, in which the Iranians took advantage of the advantage to attack several times – until in the 98th minute Chashemi scored a dramatic goal. For a moment it seemed that the game was over after this goal, but the referee didn’t blow the final whistle – and in the 100th minute (!) Razian managed to score a second time and gave Iran a particularly dramatic victory.

Following the loss, the Wales team dropped to the bottom of Group B, and their chances of advancing to the round of 16 became extremely low. Wales will have to at least beat England in the derby that will take place on Tuesday, but they also depend on the result of the match between the USA and England tonight – the result of which could knock them out of the tournament even before then. On the other hand, the Iranian team rose to second place at home – and now the politically charged match between Iran and the U.S. B is expected to be the one to decide which of them will advance to the round of 16.
