CHENNAI: Due to the increasing number of autos and cars running on natural gas, the daily sale of CNG and gas in Chennai and Tiruvallur has crossed 40 thousand kg.

Central government, to reduce the cost of imports and prevent environmental damage, batteries to replace petrol and diesel; It is advising people to use natural gas powered vehicles.

Pipeline

Indian Oil Company, a public sector company, has set up a Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal (LNG) at Ennuar Port, Tiruvallur District.

Liquid gas is brought to this terminal in ships from abroad.

From that terminal, a pipeline route has been established between Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Trichy, Madurai and Tuticorin to transport gas to various parts of Tamil Nadu.

Seven companies have been approved for distribution of LPG in 17 districts in and around the above districts.

Those companies also sell liquefied natural gas (CNG) for vehicles, such as compressed natural gas (CNG); Piped natural gas is also available for distribution to households.

High ‘Mileage’

A company called ‘Torrent’ is undertaking the distribution of LPG in Chennai and Tiruvallur. The company started selling CNG gas for vehicles in August 2021.

The company fills gas in high capacity cylinders from Ennuar terminal and distributes it through CNG centers set up at 40 petrol stations.

The price of one liter of petrol is 102.63 rupees; Diesel price is also Rs 94.24.

But, per kg CNG, gas price is 84 rupees. Petrol is cheaper than diesel and gives more ‘mileage’.

Due to this, many people are buying CNG and gas powered autos, cars and commercial vehicles instead of old autos.

Subsequently, the sale of CNG gas in Chennai and Tiruvallur in 2021, which was around 9,000 kg, has now exceeded 40,000 kg.

17 districts

As the sales of CNG continue to increase, more distribution centers are also being opened accordingly.

Similarly, in 17 districts including Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu, the companies that have been given permission to distribute liquefied gas are constructing pipelines.

Gas ‘Supply’ in Pipeline

Pipelines are being laid for distribution of natural gas to households at Vichur in Manali and Manali Pudunagar in Thiruvallur district. Already, natural gas is being supplied to more than 200 houses in some villages in Nagai district. Gas usage is metered and charged. Currently, the price of a 14.20 kg domestic cooking gas cylinder is Rs 1,068.50. The same weight of natural gas can be used for Rs 850.
