«A network of RER, a network of urban trains in ten major cities, in ten metropolises.The promise made on Sunday by the President of the French Republic furiously resembles the reality that has been observable for thirty years in a neighboring country: Spain. Its Cercanías train networks (which can be translated as “proximity” or “suburb”) exist in twelve large conurbations called “nuclei”: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Murcia – Alicante, Cadiz, Zaragoza, Malaga, as well as between towns in the small regions of Cantabria and Asturias.
All are managed by the national railway company, Renfe, and some are supplemented by lines created by the autonomous communities, in Catalonia, the Basque Country, the Balearic Islands or the Valencia region.
