It was a role that Venu Nagavalli called for, but that Mohanlal film didn’t change my career: Shankar

Shankar was one of the leading Malayalam actors in the eighties and nineties. Apart from Malayalam, the actor has acted in about 200 films and has played notable roles in Tamil as well.

In an interview with Grihalakshmi, Shankar talks about his romantic hero journey and his career.

The actor talks about how he decided to take a break from films when he got repeated roles and later played villainous roles.

”In 1988, I felt like taking a break. Similar films have been made in Malayalam. Romance and Kure Patt… felt like the track should change after Sukhamo Devi.

Meanwhile, Venu had told Nagavalli that when different roles come up, let me know and I will do it.

At that time a good project came in Tamil. The movie Kathal Ekum Nadiyinile. It took some time to complete its shooting. My focus was only on that movie. No other Malayalam projects were taken up.

After the film became a hit, he signed a contract for seven films in Tamil.

So one day Venu called Nagavalli. ‘There is a negative role, you should come,’ he said. That is what the eastern bird does. Priyadarshan’s film Abhimanyu also came out like that.

But it didn’t make much of a difference in my career. Then only such characters started coming. So it was decided to turn to the system.

Suresh did a script with Gopi. After a year of preparation, when we were about to start the film, many parts of the script that we finished ended up in another film. including similar scenes.

A few attempts were made to change the story but nothing worked. It was abandoned. He started acting again. Action films were included but not a break out. Back to the system.

Directed a film called Virus. It was an artistic movie. In between, films were coming,” said Shankar.

Shankar, who took a break from films for a while, is now back with small roles.
