Beijing: In the situation where people have taken to the streets against the government in China, it is indicated that there may be a relaxation of the Covid restrictions. Vice Premier Sun Chunlan said that as the spread of Omicron has decreased and more people have received the vaccine, the country has new tasks in terms of Covid prevention and control. Sun is key to China’s Covid-19 response.

Sun did not mention the zero covid policy. However, restrictions have been relaxed in many cities locally. In places like Guangzhou, Shijiazhuang and Chengdu, the Covid testing rules and travel restrictions have been relaxed. Business centers have reopened in some places and bus services have been restored.

In the past few days, people who have struggled with Covid restrictions have protested in many major cities including the capital Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Slogans such as ‘President Xi Jinping should resign, people should be allowed civil rights and freedom’ were also raised. There is a strong police presence in the places where the protests took place. It is reported that many people have been arrested.
