Wind power at sea: the State “gives to see” the future park of Oléron

by time news

“To show the visual effect” of the future wind farm in the South Atlantic sea: here is what the State now offers thanks to photomontages presented in La Rochelle and posted online this Friday on the Internet. The images, combining real shots and inlays of aerogenerators, are supposed to “offer the observer a visual experience as close as possible to real-time observation”.

Objective: to enable the people of Charentais-Maritimes to better understand the view that will be offered to them after the construction of a first wind farm of 1,000 MW off the island of Oléron – a second wind farm of equivalent power must be built in stride. Nicolas Basselier, prefect of Charente-Maritime, thus highlights “the transparency” displayed by the government on this ultra-sensitive file.

Different visuals from the beaches of Oléron, Ré and the mainland

The visual and landscape impacts of the aerogenerators – initially envisaged 9 km from the coast of Oléron – have long raised serious concerns. Since then, the State has reviewed its copy and pushed back the first masts 39 km from this island and 45 km from the island of Ré. The initial photomontages were therefore reworked to take into account the new location of the park.

Specializing in this type of image, the company Géophom worked on various visuals from the beaches of Oléron, Ré and the mainland. “The atmospheric opacity, the ambient light, the orientation of the sun impact the visual renderings. It’s a matter of contrast between the sky and the wind turbines,” explains Franck David, its founder. The promoters of this wind project also insist on the effects of the Earth’s curvature: at a distance of 40 km, the visible height of a 266 m mast is only 169 m. At 60 km, this height increases to 27 m.

The return, hopes the State, will perhaps reassure and convince the local populations, some of whom remain fiercely opposed to the project. After graceful appeals formulated in recent months, the first contentious appeals have been filed these days. In particular by the association Oléron Nature Environnement which seized the Administrative Court of Paris.
