Ukraine sanctions priests of pro-Moscow church

by time news

Ukraine is imposing sanctions on 10 senior clerics linked to a pro-Moscow church that has defended the Russian invasion, its security service said. The announcement is the latest in a series of moves against the Ukrainian branch of the Orthodox Church, which is historically linked to Moscow. Earlier, the Russian Orthodox Church openly supported the war.

The security forces said in a statement that the 10 clerics had agreed to cooperate with the occupation authorities, promote pro-Russian positions and justify Russian military aggression. Most of these priests are members of the Church or closely associated with it. The security department added that they live in Russian-controlled areas or abroad.

“Comprehensive operations for the protection of Ukrainian statehood continue, and the exposure of individuals who pose a threat to the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity will continue again,” the Security Service said in a statement. But relations with the Russian Orthodox Church were formally severed last May, but the Orthodox Church is still accused of secretly cooperating with Russia.
