The first Christmas markets had barely opened on Monday in Berlin at 11 a.m. when the first crêpes were fried and mulled wine tapped in the stalls on Breitscheidplatz. But the people who strolled Kurfürstendamm and Tauentzienstrasse in the direction of the Gedächtniskirche were now urged by security people to put on masks before they were allowed to pass the concrete boundaries.
