Gujarat Phase 2 polls today: Voting in 93 constituencies

The second and final phase of voting for the Gujarat Legislative Assembly will be held on Monday. Arrangements have been made for polling in 93 constituencies in 14 districts in the central and northern parts of the state.

The Election Commission announced last month that polling for the 182-member Gujarat Legislative Assembly will be held in two phases. Accordingly, the first phase of voting was completed on the 1st of last 1st in 89 constituencies in the regions of Kerala, Kutch and South Gujarat. In the second and final phase, polling will be held on Monday in 93 constituencies in 14 districts including Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Gandhinagar.

833 candidates in the field: In the second phase of polling, a total of 833 candidates including BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and 285 independent candidates are in the field. In this, BJP and AAP have fielded candidates in all 93 constituencies. Congress is contesting 90 seats and its ally Nationalist Congress in 3 seats. Parties including Bahujan Samaj (44) and Bharatiya Tribal Party (12) are also in the field.

Major candidates include Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel (Kadlodia constituency), Pattidar community leader Hardik Patel (Viramgam) contesting on behalf of BJP, Dalit community leader Jignesh Mevani (Vadgam) contesting on behalf of Congress and Assembly Opposition Leader Sukhram Rathwa (Jedpur).

2.51 crore votes: In the second phase of polling, the total number of votes was 2.51 crore. 1.29 crore males and 1.22 crore females. 14,975 polling booths have been set up for them to vote. About 1.13 lakh employees will be involved in the recruitment work.

Hot campaign: In the last 2017 assembly polls, BJP won 37 seats and Congress 22 seats in central Gujarat. Congress had won 17 seats in North Gujarat. BJP got only 14 seats.

The BJP, which has won 6 times in a row in Gujarat, campaigned hard to win for the 7th time and retain power. On the occasion of the second phase of elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged in whirlwind campaigning for the past few days and collected votes for the BJP. He also participated in 2 grand campaigns in Ahmedabad. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister Smriti Irani and others also rallied support to the BJP.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann campaigned in several parts of Gujarat in support of the party.

Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah vote today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will cast their votes in the second phase of assembly polls in Gujarat on Monday.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi arrived in Ahmedabad on Sunday evening. Later, he went to his home in Gandhinagar, met his mother Heeraben and took her blessings. After spending 45 minutes with his mother, Pratham went to the party’s head office.

He is going to cast his vote at a polling station set up in a higher secondary school at Ranib, Ahmedabad. It belongs to the Sabmati Assembly Constituency. Similarly, Home Minister Amit Shah casts his vote at the polling station in the municipal sub-zonal office in Naranpura area.

Results on Dec 8:

Gujarat is usually contested between BJP and Congress. But, this time Aam Aadmi Party also entered the fray and a three-way contest was formed. The counting of votes for the much-anticipated Gujarat assembly polls is scheduled to take place on December 8.
