The Committee for the Appointment of Judges convened today for the first time under the chairmanship of the Minister of Religious Affairs, Matan Kahana, and unanimously approved the extension of the tenure of two judges. Rishon Letzion HaGari Yosef did not participate but expressed his vote ‘in favor’ through Rabbi HaGarad Lau

The Committee for the Appointment of Judges convened today (Monday) for the first time, under the tenure of the Minister of Religious Affairs, Matan Kahana, to begin the process of extending the appointment of judges. Behadrei Haredim has learned that the first member of the committee, Rabbi Yosef, is absent from the committee.

The committee convened online through the Zoom to approve Minister Kahana’s request, to extend the tenure of fellow Dayanim Rabbi David Lebanon, Rabbi Yitzchak Hadaya and the request was approved unanimously.

There were those who believed that the first Zionist Rabbi Yosef continues the boycott policy against Minister Matan Kahana following the kashrut reform he initiated and therefore refused to participate in a discussion in which the chief rabbis, along with representatives of the government, Knesset, courts and the Bar Association, learned. Because the Rishon Lezion supported the extension of the tenure of the Dayanim and voted ‘in favor’ through the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Gared Lau, with whom he spoke by telephone.

It was also learned that the reason the rabbi did not physically attend the yeshiva was because he was not accustomed to having virtual conversations using the zoom and the like.

At the beginning of the first meeting, the Minister of Religious Affairs, Kahana, said that he hoped to begin the process of selecting the other judges soon in the government, the discussion that was supposed to take place recently was postponed and a new date has not yet been set.
